The Alignment Problem Is Not Technical
It never was.
The prevailing discourse frames alignment as an engineering challenge. Build better reward functions. Constrain outputs. Add guardrails. This framing is convenient because it suggests the problem is solvable within existing institutional structures.
It is not.
Alignment is an incentive problem. The entities deploying AI systems operate within competitive markets that reward speed, scale, and cost reduction. These incentives do not naturally select for alignment. They select for capability.
Consider the trajectory: a company develops a system that reduces operational costs by 40%. Competitors must adopt or lose market position. The deployment decision is not ethical. It is structural. The company that pauses to evaluate alignment implications loses ground to the company that does not.
This is not a failure of individual actors. It is the predictable output of incentive architectures that treat deployment speed as a competitive advantage and alignment as an overhead cost.
The technical community has produced remarkable work on constitutional AI, RLHF, and interpretability. These contributions matter. But they operate downstream of the fundamental problem: the systems that decide what gets deployed, when, and at what scale are not optimized for alignment.
Governance lags capability. This is not a bug. It is the structural relationship between innovation velocity and institutional response time. Regulatory frameworks are designed for incremental change. AI capability curves are exponential.
The gap between these two curves is where misalignment lives.
So what does alignment actually require? Not better models. Better incentive structures. Coordination mechanisms that make alignment economically viable. Governance frameworks that can operate at the speed of deployment.
This is harder than building a reward function. It requires changing the conditions under which decisions are made.
